Hello experts,

I have to download a new version of a code to a S7 400 CPU. It is running now and I have added  some functions and changed some others and I have to download the new blocks to the CPU. It has a memory card on it. Do I need to download to the CPU or Memory Card?

Hi,

It is not possible to update memory card without Stop PLC.

You have 2 choices :

1 - Download the new program into PLC and then transfer data from PLC to Memory Card but to save program on memory card you need to stop the PLC.

2 - Download program directly into Memory card if you have PG console and put the new card into PLC. But, in the same way, you need to stop PLC if you exchange memory card.If you do it when PLC is in run mode, PLC stay in Run mode but Stop led will blink faster as long as you don't take in account the new memory card (To transfer program from Memory card to PLC RAM using RUN/STOP/MRES switch).

Programs stored in RAM are lost when you reset the CPU memory (MRES) 

Programs saved on memory cards are not erased by a CPU memory reset and are retained even without battery backup.

I just got the following information:

CPU: 6ES7416-3ER05-0AB0

and Memory Card: 6es7 952-1am00-0aa0 which is a RAM. 

Now to download the code, can I just download to PLC? Do I need to delete anything from the memory card? is the older version of the code going to remain on the memory card?

I would appreciate your help. I am all new to this world and this is my first project with S7 400.

Hello,

1-Upload the program from the CPU and save it in a safe place.

2-Do the modifications in a copy of this program.

3-Download the new codes"the modifications" which are override the old codes in the CPU only.

4-The other codes remain without any change.

5-No need to delete any thing in the memory card.

Warning:If you remove the RAM Memory Card from the CPU, you lose the data and files stored there. With the RAM Memory Card, the battery or power supply of the CPU is necessary to ensure that the data and program are not lost on the memory card.

To the CPU, a RAM card is simply an extension to the internal RAM.

To make a download, you do not need to do anything different. You just select Download and Step7 will overwrite the load memory (internal + RAM card if needed).
