Hello. I have a problem with a machine I need to get access to. I have licences for TIA Portal up to v20 Proffessional. I have a device 6ES7 214-1AG40-0XB0 which via Accessible Devices menu shows it was programmed with TIA Portal v15.1 and it has a Firmware version of 4.5.1 installed.

I tried to download it, but:

1. Using v15.1: I added this device with a 4.2 version (my maximum here) and when going online it was said is is incompatible. When I tried to add unknown device and detect it it aborted the procedure saying it cannot find the article number.

2. Using v16: I had maximum of 4.4 version, but still same issue. The only change is that it allows to detect it, but shows it is incompatible.

3. Using v19: It bahaves identically like with v16, but it has v4.5 and v4.6 available. When I added the exact device and with firmware v4.5, it went online but denied downloading saying it has an incompatible firmware.

How can I get an access to the software?

I also tried to install latest v15.1 update (Upd8) with same result.

When I did this thing like in the [embedded] video

then It thrown me an error:

Doing the same with TIA v19 proceeds, but says the program needed is v15.1.

I did another research and there was a similar problem before. Here is the link to the forum thread and in last post there is an answer. Support packages can be found here.

It now allowed me to upload whole PLC hardware, and theoretically also software without any errors, but still it shows me that my version is 4.3 and online 4.5. Also all circles next to the program blocks are half blue and half orange meaning there are some differences between them, even though the upload was complete (language en_US (offline) and es_ES (online).

May I change it to 4.5 somehow?

May I change any block and download it without breaking the PLC program (I have now online view in RT)?

How do you load the project data if the version of the firmware installed in the S7-1500 CPU cannot be selected in the hardware catalog of your version of STEP 7 (TIA Portal)?

Conclusion:

The firmware of CPU is v4.5

Using TIA Portal v15.1 the project uses FW v4.3 (Latest one for v15.1)

(You can not change the firmware version to v4.5 using TIA Portal v15.1 )

The colored circles (Blue/Orange) can be because of Date/Time stamp

So to summarize I can load a project with v15.1 (v4.3), but my project will miss some new stuff available in v4.5.1. But the program itself will work without a problem.

To fully utilize the new firmware I would need to upgrade existing project to v16 and then to higher to be able to choose v4.5 in the hardware config and then load that upgraded version into my device.

Am I right?

 Yes, you can load a project with v15.1 (fw 4.3), and your program will work. (Only new issue's of Fw v4.5 can not be used)

When you want to use those new features, you will need at least TIA Portal v17,
