It would be helpful if you added information on the system you plan to use, or at least tell us if you are considering redundancy between CPUs or SCADA PCs, or some other component in your automation design. The redundancy mechanisms are different for each system.

Here would be the quick and simple reply: any fault detected on a CPU in a H-system, on the remote I/O channels or in the fiber-optic cables dedicated to redundancy on a S7-400H will provoque an immediate switchover (change of active primary CPU to the stand-by). This is explained in the following manual, which you should study and keep near you when wiorking with a S7-400H system:
