Safety Integrated - How to use STO only, no SS1 ?

Advanced Member Joined: 4/10/2020 Last visit: 11/4/2024 Posts: 77 Rating: (1)	Hi technology specialists, My configuration : - TIA Portal V18 Update 3 - CPU 1515-2PN (FW v2.9) - S120 CU320-2PN control unit (FW V5.2) - Motion Control V6.0 I am using a TO_PositioningAxis to control a servomotor driven by a S120 CU320. I use wired contacts for Safety Integrated, and I want to use STO only. In the drive object parameter tree, in "Safety Integrated", I have chosen "Basic Functions" and control type "via on board terminals". Then, in Stop functions, I got the two checkboxes automatically checked for STO and SS1, and these checkboxes are not editable, neither offline nor online. I would like to uncheck SS1, isn't it possible to use STO only ? Attachment SI_STO_SS1.PNG (444 Downloads)

Graeme Platinum Member Joined: 6/4/2008 Last visit: 11/11/2024 Posts: 1503 Rating: (325)	Hi, if you don't want to use the SS1 functionality (attempt to rapidly ramp down), then simply setting an SS1 time of 0.0 seconds will immediately activate STO when the safety system is activated making the SS1 aspect redundant. Advanced Member Joined: 4/10/2020 Last visit: 11/4/2024 Posts: 77 Rating: (1)	Hi Graeme, Actually, because I am using T.O. in the PLC to control the axis, when an E-stop is pushed I perform a Fast stop in the T.O., and therefore in the drive i would like to trigger the STO after the axis is stopped. But, at the moment, if an E-Stop is pushed during an axis motion, it triggers "MC Alarm 550: PLC TO_MyAxis : Drive-autonomous motion is being executed." That is the reason I am looking to disable SS1 from the drive, in order to perform fast stop through PLC's T.O. and then triggers STO in Drive when the axis is standstill.

You can`t assign STO or SS1 separately to this single failsafe digital input, therefore you can`t deselect STO or SS1. But when clicking on the colored symbols, no matter if STO or SS1, you will end up in the same parameter window anyway. Like Graeme said, when you don`t want to use SS1 simply keep the timer in default setting, 0s. STO is triggered then directly as soon as terminals getting a logical false signal. If you want a delayed response in combination with TO, you can use SS1E external stop setting, see attached screenshot. In this setting the drive does not decelerate on his OFF3 ramp when SS1 is activated, just the SS1 delay time starts counting down. You can use the SS1 active feedback to stop TO. I have set SSIE as in your screenshot, It works as expected but I can't get rid of T.O. alarm "MC Alarm 550: PLC TO_MyAxis : Drive-autonomous motion is being executed." As soon as the E-Stop is pushed, this alarm shows up. Is there a way for not getting this alarm ?

The TO has to bring the drive to a stop not the drive itself. When TO is doing the braking and drive is just following the TO speed setpoint for SS1E delay time you can avoid alarm 550.

Advanced Member Joined: 4/10/2020 Last visit: 11/4/2024 Posts: 77 Rating: (1)	Hi Technology Team, thank you for your help, it drove me to the problem : When SSIE was triggered, I requested a MC_Halt with a high dynamic. The axis need 0,5s to decelerate. The PLC program was waiting for Standstill signal to disable the axis with MC_POWER. The Standstill 'in window time' setting was set at 0,3s. In the Drive, the time setting for STO delay was 0,6s. Therefore, the axis was still enabled when STO triggered, which was the reason to get fault MC Alarm 550. I did not calculate the STO delay time corectly, it must be Deceleration time + Standstill window time + a short time to leave time to the axis te get discabled. Problem solved.

I f i choose extended advanced fuctions it is possible to choose SS1E external stop like you suggested but then i need licence because SLS is activated? Thanks

The selection is greyed if time delay time p9652 is "0". You can change p9652 to a value >0 to activate the field or you can switch to parameter view and change p9653=1 there. SS1 with external stop is also possible using safety integrated basic functions, see safety integrated function manual section 5.1.2.2 https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/view/109781535
