Absolute Encoder in TIA Portal Technology Object.

Hi all,

I am using an absolute encoder to measure a degree from 0-359. 

PLC - S71500 1517f

Encoder Specification - TR Electronics external encoder. Steps = 8.192 & Revolution is 4096. 

I am using the technology object "External Encoder" and have configured this encoder. I have all set up properly. The "Data Exchange" is set to automatic. 

The issue is that every half-turn of the encoder the actual value goes from 0-359 and then again for the next half circle it goes from 0-359.

I would like to have it inform that one full turn of the encoder gives me actual value as 0-359.

Is there any setting that needs to be done in a technology object. I have also tested to home the encoder it works fine. 

One more strange thing I observed, TIA reads actual value even when MC_Power is not enabled, I am not sure if that's how it should work. 

Please feel free to ask for any further clarification or questions.  have never used an external encoder using technology objects.

Hi, Thank you for sharing the manuals.

I tried a lot of things from the manual but still could not get the right value. 

Half Circle of encoder = 360 degrees.

I am attaching the code I hope it might give you more ideas of what I am doing wrong. 

The code is in TIA V15.1 updt4. Encoder steps = 8192 and revolution = 4096

set your encoder to "Cyclic absolute" 

Absolute = Singleturn

Cyclic absolute = Multiturn

Can you also post the model of your TR Electronics external encoder? For me it seems you have a 4096 steps per revolution encoder, not 8192.

Also if you use multiturn encoders you have to set to "Cyclic absolute". Otherwise multiple revolutions are not considered! The other settings in your project looked good. You said you already tried "Cyclic absolute" which looks to me you don't have 8192. If you got a 4096 encoder but configure the technological object to use 8192 and "Absolute" (which means single turn), after the first 4096 steps the encoder starts with 0 and the TO goes back to 0°. Please post your encoder model.
