Best practice to switch off a HMI panel

Our engineers need to switch off and on the control panel (MP377 + CPU 314C) about 3-5 times during a service or commissioning job. Last month we got a system file corruption after a power-off and had to reset HMI to factory settings and reload the program.

This is very rare to me according to my years of experience. But i  am wondering what is the best practice to switch off the system?

What we are doing is just cutting off the power, then power back on. Someone mentioned to disconnect the Ethernet cable from HMI to PLC first, then cut off the power supply?

Anyone got any ideas on this?

I shut off, wait 5 seconds and the turn on again - my opinion.

I had never problems in the last 15 years...

in my opinion is better probably first off RT (Visualisation) if it's implemented via some button and then continue like Towome sugested.

Why would you like to switch off and on power several times?

You can simply program a button to exit runtime or to disconnect the connection to PLC.

The best practice is to keep the power source stable as much as you can, so it is recommended no only to keep it on but also to power it from DO UPS. please see note in the footer of page 4 for this document.

With panels and Windows-CE Panels i never have had problems due switching off the Panel.

It is different from Winows - RT PC's.

Normally nothing should happen if it is switched off.
Crashing of HMI OS cannot be prevented by de-activating the runtime or disconnecting PLC link.
However there is no harm in following this practice.

I have never had a problem like this in the last >25 years with HMI panels from Protool to TIA.
( Have had some crashes while downloading Firmware update though )

Only thing that we take care is that the panel should not be switched back on for at least 30 seconds.
This ensures that any charged devices are fully discharged before next switch on.

Yes, to wait some seconds is a good idea anyway.

I just switch on/off comfort panels without any problems for years... happens usually when testing the software before shipping.

Just don't power on & off immediately but wait at least some seconds... like 4-5 seconds.

So I agree with already said by other people here.
