Choosing the right CPU

Hello,

i'm a bit novice in terms of selecting the right CPU for use, so i want to discuss/learn how to select right cpu.

I looked in other topics with selecting CPUs in the forum, however after converting to the SIA portal, the links to manuals are broken, so it wasn't helpfull at all...

I have to select newer CPU instead S7-317-2 PN/DP.

I selected the ET200SP 1510CPU with 4MB card, however i have doubts in the memmory sizes - in the 317-2 is 1MB work memmory, but the ET200 SP top CPU (1514) have "only" 900KB Program memmory and 4,5MB data memmory.
Is "old" 317-2 1MB of memmory same with 1510 1MB Program memmory?

A comparison of the specifications of the new CPU 1510SP-1 PN (6ES7510-1DK03-0AB0) and the CPU317-2 PN/DP (6ES7317-2EK14-0AB0) shows that the processing times of the CPUs are almost identical. The total memory of the CPU 1510SP-1 PN is larger, but like all S7-1500 CPUs it is divided into program and data memory. However, for most applications this is the correct ratio.

So I would say the two CPUs are pretty comparable. But it always depends on the requirements. In terms of PLC innovation, you can also think about program innovation, such as providing new features. So maybe a more powerful PLC would fit your needs better. In terms of the S7-300 family, the CPU317-2 PN/DP is characterized as a high-end CPU, while the performance class of the CPU 1510SP-1 PN is characterized as low.

In general, Siemens provides a very good hardware selection software free of charge with the TIA Selection Tool.

Regarding the memory card (SMC), you should be aware that a S7-1200/1500 PLC typically requires 10 times more memory than a S7-300/400.

I'm currently using TIA Selection Tool to select PLC Configuration, where i can find some filter/helper with choosing the right CPU for my needs from I/O or Technology objects?

after creating a new device you can use some filters which helps to decide what cpu family is capable (screenshot part 1).
After you decided for a cpu family, it is possible use some parameters in "CPU design" e.g. eanable motion control. Afterwards you can do some more specification with tab "motion control" (screenshot part 2.

In general sharing screenshots in this regars is just a basic help.. but with some self search and "clicking thorugh" TIA Selection it should not be too much of a deal to find some information...
