Communication B/W Wincc flexible PC runtime and MODBUS meter?

I am using wincc flexible 2008 sp2 software. Manual says that through MODBUS RTU protocol we can able to communicate with schneider cpu. But now i need to communicate with schneider meter it can be done using the same settings ??? Explain me how it can be done ????

Darius Platinum Expert Joined: 9/28/2005 Last visit: 12/10/2024 Posts: 2957 Rating: (243)	Hi, You should act as if you have regular CPU. I think you need to choose one of the Modicon PLCs in the driverselection list (according to the protocol used in meter) and it should work without problems.

I have to create 50 connections ??? How much meter i have to connect in a loop ? Because my PC having RS232 port so i have to loop meter in RS485 and i have to convertor.... So how it can be done ????

Darius Platinum Expert Joined: 9/28/2005 Last visit: 12/10/2024 Posts: 2957 Rating: (243)	Hi, No, you don't need to use 50 connections ! Modbus devices have address, so you can address them. Please do not use RS232 of your computer ! Please buy some RS485/Ethernet server (look at MOXA product line, for example). Once you have virtual RS485 server, you can split your 50 devices into two parts of 25, because you will have problems with 50 modbus devices on one line. So you should have RS485/Ethernet converter with at least two 485 ports, connect 25 devices (for example) to each port and use 2 connections on Flexible. Sory I'm not very detailed, but I hope you got an idea.

Because registers for meters are identical so how we can create tags in flexible. Slave address is different for each meter so how we will create connection ? If you explain me about that it will be helpful for me....

Basically you would need to have 50 connections, but you will be not able to create so much. So you need to use lets say S7-1214C PLC with two RS485 CP proccessors as a Modbus coupler. I think there is no other way. Then in Flexible you will communicate directly to S7-1214C PLC. Normally I allways use coupler in such cases as yours and was confused by myself with those 2 damn RS485 ports . Well theoretically you should be able to connect 64 devices on 1 line, but it will bepend on line lenght and lenght between two devices and it will be still problems. Better is to spilt those devices at least to 2 lines.

However as per the WinCC Flexible Communication Manual - Vol-2 , ( Section 2.1 Page-250) Pl check out : http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/18797249 You can have a Max of 4 connections defined on Modbus Channel. This driver is designed for communication with PLCs on Modbus and although it dows work with other Modbus devices, the no of channels that can be defined is limited to 4 only. Therefore it isnot be possible to have 50 meters as each meter will have to be defined as a seperate seperate connection. Max of 4 meters can therefore be connected. You can consider using a S7-200 ( 224XP ) with Modbus Master or better still use IM151-7/8 with 1SI Modbus Master to act as a gateway. These can collect data from all meters on a Modbus and provide them to the same on a PPI / TCP-IP link to WinCC Flexible. Hope this helps Cheers Navnag

RS485/Ethernet is regular virtual COM port in your computer and you will still be limited in number of connections. You need to find some Modbus RTU couples anyways.It can be S7 controller, or some other device, Flex will not be able to handle so much connections. And that was me who confused you, because I thought about number of COM ports, but not connections
