Encoder initialization errors. firmware problem?

I have a 6SL3040-0NA00-0AA0 control unit that was controlling a 1PH7 motor with an IC22DQ drive-cliq encoder. This motor failed and I replaced it with the 1PH8 motor that was supposed to be the new replacement for this obsolete 1PH7 motor. The new 1PH7 has identical specs, including the IC22DQ encoder. The control unit sees the Drive-cliq interface and can upload the motor data, but the unit will not recognize the encoder and continues to throw encoder initialization errors.
