Is Auto Tuning viable?

Hello!

So I have been working on a Hot rolling mill for rebar production, and we have these hot metal detectors which detects the level of metal in a construction called "Looper", this looper consists of a roller that goes up once the metal is inside the mill after the looper causing a small bend in the metal and the metal detector senses the height of that bend to control it using the speeds of the mill motors before the loopers to keep it steady at a certain level.

The hot metal detector or "looper scanner" in one of the loopers needs tuning as it's oscillating violently up and down the set point to no end, I was wondering if I could auto tune the looper while the mill is operating to get proper values for the PID that could help stabilize the looper.

Is that possible without wasting a billet being rolled inside the rolling mill ?

if it is not possible what should I do to be able to tune the looper?

All the loopers has a disable button, So I could disable or enable the PID control on any of the loopers! would that help in tuning the bad looper without stopping production or causing a metal out of mill problem?

we are using S7-1500 PLC.

with analog RIO close to the loopers and connected to the main PLC using a PB connection.

I know it's a bit of a specialized question regarding the rolling mills but it is really important as it is causing much damage to the product ! so can someone help ?

PID parameters are probably set incorrectly. Also the looper 0-100 limit must be set correctly. If you share your Plc-Scada program, I will try to help you.
