So all 32 DI 24 VDC of the S7-1500 family will be sinking, See the attachment below, taken from the S7-1500/TIA Portal brochure.

There is is only sourciing inputs 24 VDC DI module of the S7-1500 family:

what is the most efficient way to connect analog laser sensor for motor speed control? 

a) Sensors connected to PLC analog card?  

b) Sensor directly connected to S120 control unit?

I guess it depends on what you intend to do with the laser sensor and how needs to adjust speed control, and more importantly, whether you are prepared to handle all that inside the control unit using DCC/CFC.
