Hello; The encoding pin (coding mechanism) is not meant to distinguish between individual I/O modues of the same size. It is designed to prevent connection of field wiring on the wrong type of digital or analog module. I am more familiar with the S7-300 family, so my examples will be based on these PLCs. Baiscally, when you setup a new PLC system, there are encoding pins in all of the I/O module front connectors. They already are set to a specific numeric position that identifies the type of module (either a DI, a DO, a AI or IO module) . The first time you put the front connector into any I/O module, the coding pins are transfered to the receiving nodes in the front connector, and this front connector can only be plugged in to that specific type of module. Later say your module needs to be replaced and the front onnector is already wired and you choose to re-use it, you can remove the coding pins that are embedded in the new I/O module so you can accomodate the old front connector that alredy has its encoding pins.
