opc client connection

RVR Posts: 13 Rating: (0)	Hello, -What is the preferredway to get data from WinCC in a PCS7 Server/client architecture with a third party opc client ? Connecting to a WinCC client or connecting to a WinCC server ? Connecting to a WinCC server via the terminal bus or connecting to a WinCC server with a separate network card ? We've tried several methods, and we encountered no problem when we where connected to the WinCC server via the terminal bus or with a separate network card in the server. But, when we connect to a wincc cient, then the performance of the client and the performance of the terminal bus gets down ! At the other hand,Siemenstechnicians say that the only supported way is connecting via the wincc client, thus connecting to the wincc opc server on apcs7wincc client !!! How is it possible that the performance of the terminal bus gets down when we connect the third party opc client to the opc server on a wincc client ?Is the data always there on a wincc client or only when asking in a pdl, archiving, opc clienty sessions, etc... A lot of questions, and I hope also a lot of answers. Thanks very much RVR

Testermax Posts: 159 Rating: (3)	In our installation we are communicating through the terminalbus from the OPC client (national instruments equip.) to the wincc opc server. I havent noticed any problems with that setup. We are also sending some data to an historian through the termialbus, with OPC.

Server or Client doesn't matter, it's matter when you have redundand connection. here a previuos tread, not exactly what you asked but intresting answer PCS7 And Simatic Batch OPC Server hope can help

Does anybody know where I can find a document with other specifications of the WinCC OPC DA Server ? Maximum count of clients etc... What about the network load of the terminal bus when connected to the OPC Server of a WinCC client ? All the data has to come from de data manager of a WinCC Server. Is the prefered architecture to connect to a WinCC client only because of redundancy ? Then, if redundancy is not that important, connection to the OPC Server of a WinCC Server causes less network load ??? Maybe a specialist from Siemens can give me all the answers ! Thanks

Network load is not the deciding criterion but a redundant or non-redundant configuration. For non-redundant WinCC it does not matter where the OPC server is located but for redundant WinCC servers, the OPC server should be on the client so that the OPC comm does not depend on the dual server operation. The Open PCS 7 acts as a OPC gateway with better throughput and more OPC protocols (DA, AE, HDA, HAE with HDA/HAE coming from either a PCS 7 OS Server log files or from a Central Archive Server {CAS}). Open PCS 7 is available with PCS 7 V7.0 SP1 or later ans has the following performance capability: OPEN PCS 7 OPC Performance Data: Ø OpenPCS 7 support up to 150,000 message definitions per Server (known as messages). Ø The OpenPCS 7 station supports 120 messages (10 per Server) per second as an average load. Ø The OpenPCS 7 station supports 12,000 messages (1,000 per server) per second as a maximum (peak) load. The duration of the peak is 15 seconds in maximum and the time between two peaks is at least 600 seconds. Ø The OpenPCS 7 station supports up to 400 messages per second maximum for historical alarm and event data. Ø OpenPCS 7 supports up to 5,000 archive tag definitions per Server (known as archiv tags). Ø OpenPCS 7 supports up to 256,000 tags per Server. Ø The OpenPCS 7 station supports 12,000 values (1,000 per server) per second as an average load.
