My esteemed forum colleague is thinking of the S7-1200 of FW 1.0 days.
With Firmware 2.2 and 3.0 or higher and portal V11 SP2 and V12 or higher, you can use distributed I/O which looks and feels like remote I/Owith varying levels of diagnostics available (depending on modules selected).

Update the hardware catalog using the hardware support packs, then you can see what Siemens defaults as distributed I/O options. You will see plenty of options. Also, I believe there are third party profinet based distributed I/O vendors providing GSD files that will work with the S7-1200 family of PLCs.

I think one of the popular options is the IM151 (if I remember the generic model correctly).

From your project devices & networks, you can select various distributed I/O options from the hardware catalog in the portal and drag them into your project. You can then see if they are sufficient for your project and then purchase the components.
