S7-1200 maximum encoder connection

It would be my first project with encoder so i may be wrong somewhere... I need to quote reading of4different encoder angle position. I'm thinking of incremental A/B for Fwd/rev direction. I know i would need 8 fast inputs and 4 HSC counter...When i look in the 1214 specs their is only 6 inputs availaible for high speed counting....Can i add an input moduleto get the last counter ? Thesmall cpu modules say''yes'' for counter functions... I'am right looking at just connecting A andB or i need to plan reading A' and B' from my encoders to know i turn backward? Thanks

Thanks Look at the specs for the S7-1215. If it does not have enough inputs, you may want to look at S7-300, or multiple s7-1215's and share data and control between them. Maybe 2 or 3 of them should do the trick.

I tough i had inputs for at least 3 encoder on 1 cpu, am i wrong ? i was looking at 1214 as 1215 semm to havethe same specs for hsc inputs or encoder...

This comment, "8 fast inputs and 4 HSC counter..." is why 2 or 3. 8 fast inputs means PLC rather than add-on module inputs. Check this thread for details on the S7-1215: /tf/WW/en/Posts/73271 To read A&B channels for speed/direction, that's 2 HSCs per encoder, and 8 fast inputs is one PLC with a few inputs left over. To me, that's 3 PLCs, but you might find a way to get by with just 2. There may be some industrial piece of hardware that just detects encoder direction and provides a 1/0 output based on relationship between A-A'/B-B' -- and canbe put to a regular plc input and save on HSC inputs.

Thanks Hello, We're installing simillar application atm. It should be finished by the end of the week. We have 9 linear encoders connected to 1214C (6) and 1212C (3). Each CPU has SB1221 because we need to use reset inputs. 1214C has 6HSC that uses 12 of 14 on-board inputs. If You look at page 343 of "S7-1200 Programmable controller System Manual, 04/2012, A5E02486680-06", You'll see how to connect encoders. A/B connection should be enough for direction detecting. Maybe you're rotation speed is slow enough to read it from normal input ? From my understanding there are 6 HSC not 6 fast inputs. Refer to page 728 of manual. Inputs I0.0 to I0.5 have rates of 80kHz and I0.6 to I1.5 - 20 kHz. I'll test it tomorrow with 20kHz.

From the link provided above: o The SIMATIC S7-1215C features six high-speed counters (HSC) build in – three with a clock rate of 100 kHz and another three with a clock rate of 30 kHz, using the readily available Signal Boards up to 200 kHz can be achieved as well. Furthermore there are four PTO outputs to control stepper drives simultaneously. That is (1) 200kHz using add-on signal board, (3) 100kHz, (3) 30kHz, or 7 encoder / fast inputs. You can also using F/V signal converters to convert Freq to Voltage and use analog inputs for speed input.
