Sending Emails via TM_MAIL Command

SE Automation - M... Posts: 7 Rating: (3)	After many trials and errors, I have figured out how to use the TM_MAIL command in the 1200 to send emails. First of all, you do NOT need a teleservice adapter. I don't have one, and the command works fine. Here are some rules to follow to the LETTER. 1. Your TO_S field must have a space between the TO_S and the <emailaddress>. 2. There must be a comma AFTER the <emailaddress> 3. The FROM field must have a ":" after FROM then a space, then the <emailaddress> This command is SO picky that any mistakes in the formatting WILL result in an error. Now, some more data. The SMTP server must receive SMTP via port 25. This is hardcoded into the TM_MAIL command and can't be changed. Be aware, most IT departments block port 25 in the event a PC gets a virus that turns it into a rogue email generator. Mine does this, so we were not able to test this on external servers. We used our own Exchange server and had to allow it to receive SMTP commands from the IP address assigned to the PLC. This is done via the Exchange Management Console: Server Configuration - Hub Transport - Receive Connectors - IP Relay - Under the "Netowork" Tab, there is a box titled "Receive mail from remote servers that have these IP Addresses". This is where you put the IP address of the PLC that is executing this command and it will work. NO authentication is required for this type of set up with Exchange. Now, if you do not have Exchange, the other service that I have found that works is inbox.com. Set up an account, and go through the steps of enabling the account to allow remote POP3/SMTP. This is not set automatically, so you need to do it yourself. Then, you will need to go into the DB for the TM_MAIL command and enter the user name and password for your account and it will work fine as long as your business does not block port 25 commands. Remember, most do!! Finally, with ALL email servers, you must convert the IP address octets into HEX. One thing that was not clear is if, for example, one octet is decimal "10" which is HEX "A". In this case, you MUST enter "0A" for that octet. The calculator in windows is an awesome hex conversion tool, FYI. Good luck, but please don't ask me to figure out your particular email server. I'm by no means an email/SMTP wizard. But, just know that this command can and does work and you can now send emails via the S7-1200 using the TM_MAIL command without having a TS adapter. NOTE: This command will NOT work with Gmail and other similar email services because their external POP3 and SMTP access is secured and does not use port 25 at this time, and remember, most IT departments block port 25 traffic so you may need to test from home or someplace that does not block this traffic.

I typcially then install a PC or laptop on this lan via a dedicated nic. I will connecta secondnic in thePC to the "office" LAN which gives it internet access. Then using TeamViewer I can do maintenance and monitoring of the automation installation remotely. I just occured to me this morning thatif I want thePLC in such a configuration to send me an email I am going to need some way for the email got get from thePLC lan to the "office" lan. The PC is common to both LANs but as currently configured it does not bridge them in any way. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

SE Automation - M... Posts: 7 Rating: (3)	What I would suggest to not use the PC and team viewer any longer and dig into using an Ewon device. You simply hook the WAN side of the Ewon to the business lan, and that Lan side of the Ewon is your automation system. In each automation device you set the gateway address to the IP address of the Ewon unit. Then, you simply can access ALL of your devices remotely via Ewon's ecatcher VPN service (free) and the PLC can send emails using my method above. Simple! Mike

I have been investigating the possiblity of installing a minimal email relay or email server on the PC that could be configured to accept emails from the private PLC LAN on port 25 and forward the emails via the office LAN to one or more gmail or hotmail addressescreated for this purpose. These forwards would be sent viawhichever port the public email service prefers.This adds a little complexity but it also adds a lot of flexibility with regard to maintaining who gets which email notifications/alarms.

SE Automation - M... Posts: 7 Rating: (3)	Depending on the features, an Ewon unit runs from $800 to $1500 roughly. It will not help with the port 25 issues mainly because this is something that businesses block on the outbound side of their routers. Also, remember when setting up whatever email server you want, that MANY ISP's also block traffic on port 25. I believe Roadrunner/Time Warner is one of the big ones here in the US that does, and many others do as well. Good luck.

(My ISP only accepts email on port 25 from clients connect via service connections they provide. When I travel, Ican only send through their server if I use port 587.)

You can reach and change it in the TCONPARAM inside the TM_MAIL_DB. The TCONPARAM is a normal profile for the TCON block. (Read the help in TIA for how to set the port). Ben
