Uploading program with GSD files

aamirawan91 Regular Member Joined: 3/6/2022 Last visit: 10/23/2024 Posts: 107 Rating: (2)	I uploaded a program from a running machine with an S7-300 PLC (6ES7317-2AK14-0AB0) connected to 6 profibus slaves (3 lenze drives and 3 IM modules). In the HW configuration of uploaded program the drives had "DP-NORM" written on them and when i opened it it had question marks (?????) against the order number and DP slave type of the drives. Is it because my Step 7 5.6 didn't have those GSD files installed already? Anyway after doing some changes in the program I downloaded the program back to the PLC but now the drives are not communciating and when I went online in the HW config there is a red line on the drive files which means no communciation. Is it because my Step 7 probably didn't have the GSD file installed? So when you upload a program from a PLC with GSD files in step 7 5.6 does that mean you can't download it back again? Then what is the right way to deal with programs with GSD files? This is not the case with TIA Portal. I remember uploading a program in TIA and it uploaded proxy files cause my TIA didn't have the right GSD files but downloading the program back to the PLC worked. Is it not the case with simatic manager? Now what is the way forward for me? Do i need to find the correct GSD files and install them and configure the drives manually to make them work again? dchartier Grandmaster-Expert Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 11/6/2024 Posts: 12293 Rating: (2690)	Hello aamirawan; A GDD file is a text file containing information for a Profibus master to construct exchanges with a 3rd-party slave. As such it exists in your programming PC, inside Step 7 (if you can open the original Step 7 program, you will find them in the C:\Program Files\Siemens\Step7\S7DATA\GSD directory). Step 7 builds the data exchanges between Profibus nodes based on the gsd files but the gsd files are not downloaded to the CPU as part of the program. That explains why you cannot upload these gsd files from the CPU. When yiu upload the program there is information missing that cannot be recreated without yhe gsd files in uour Step 7 directories. The easiest way to solve this issue, if you can access the original programming PC would be to copy the gsd files from the directory shown earlier and copy yhem to the same directory on your present PC, and save/compile/download the Step 7 program to your CPU. If you cannot have access to the original gdd files, you will have to locate them, often from the manufacturer's website and install them in your Step 7 program. You will also have to recreate the individual slaves, taking care that you maintain the I/O addressing yiu used in yhe irigonal program. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier
