Vibration diagnostics and frequency analysis

We have a project to detect vibration through frequency analysis.  For this purpose, we use an s1200 cpu along with the SM 1281 module and acceleration sensors.  My problem is that babbitt bearing is used instead of rolling bearing in some of our engines.  Using the acceleration sensor in this type of bearing makes it possible to identify the problem too late.  We should use one or more sensors to detect the displacement of the shaft so that we can find out the problem faster, but what kind and how many sensors?  please guide me
