If you are only makingmodifications to S7 PLC's or implementing a small newMachine , a Notebook with XPand minium 2 MEG Ram ( 4 is better ) and minium of 2USBports , Ethernet Card ........., is ok . Now, if you getting into Step 7 Profecional and WINCC / WINCC Flexibleand oryou need to configure Safety Aplications and Drives , I would recomend to purchase a Simatic Field PG . It is more expensive than a Notebook , but it comes withSoftware, Cabels and all the Ports you need to workand configure Applications. Also it ismore rugged ifthan a Standard Notebook.

Better, purchase FieldPG - you will receive hardware + software (include license). You can compare with other way - buy software with license + some kind of cables, that you need, and after that notebook with nesessary port. Check in the market price for notebook with serial port. for example Siemens Lifebook, or model of HP. regards

I your case I would advise you to buy a Siemens FieldPG, not only because it is almost ready to start after getting it out of the box, but also because of the costs. When you buy all software with the necesarry licenses and the different cables and the very handy USP-Prommer anda notebook with a real serial RS232 port and with PCMCIA-card slots then costs are higher then a FieldPG. Of course you can expand the FieldPG's memory with common memory modules instead of the "special Siemens FieldPG memory".
