I have the same question. I have a non-Siemens controller, and I would like to have it communicate with a S7-1200 that is configured as a Profinet device. (I have tried a few things but always get "IO device failure" errors when I try to start up my Profinet device on the S7.) Is there a tutorial or something on how to setup the S7-1200 as a Profinet device? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Hello bmartin; Configuring the S7-1200 as an i-device to a 3rd-party IO controller is described in these pages of the S7-1200 Programmable Controller manual: https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/view/109759862/86862395147 You then have to use the generated gsdml file to integrate it in your controller's configuration software, drag a S7-1200 i-device to the Profinst bus, and configure the IO Controller to exchange the data configured in the exported i-device. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |

Thank you for the replies. I have previously read the help text and was able to export a GSDML file as described and load it into my 3rd party controller's software. My issue is that I get the following error when trying to start my device on the S7-1200: And for reference my network view looks like this: Clearly my device is not connected to anything in the Network View which is probably what the error message is referring to. However, I did not expect to have to connect anything to it in the configuration because all of the other Profinet devices that I have do not require any prior knowledge of the controllers on the network and simply connect to a controller upon request provided that the controller is using the device's GSDML file. So if "the external Profinet device needs to be known to the S7-1200 PLC using whatever methods are available for that device" as mentioned by 0_Einstein, what is the recommended method to make a 3rd party controller known to the device on the S7 using TIA Portal? I do not have a GSDML file for my controller since GSDML is limited to describing devices so I am unable to just use the GSDML importer to import the controller description into TIA Portal and drag it to the Network View (as I would in the case of a 3rd party device). |

no must not if you work with different projects and GSDML Files |
