Hi,
Yes, the ethernet port is shared between your arduino sketch and the linux operating system.
The difference is, that you don't have to configure the Ethernet interface (e.g. no need to set MAC, IP, gateway, dns, dhcp). The only header you need is "EthernetClient.h" and the class EthernetClient. See the stripped down example, based on the example sketch "Ethernet (Galileo)/WebClient" in the attached sketch.
