I recommend to use a USB-Stick no larger than 32GB, formatted in FAT32 because mounting exfat drives on the IOT is not supported and NTFS has some issues when writing to drive. 

So insert a FAT32 formatted USB Stick.

List devices with 

lsblk

Usually a USB-Stick will appear under /dev/sda1

Create a mounting directory, e.g:

mkdir /media/usb-drive

Mount it to this location:

mount /dev/sda1 /media/usb-drive

Use mountpoint to write and read files to usb drive. When finished, unmount device:

umount /media/usb-drive

 
Regarding health check of USB Drive, there is actually a tool on the IOT that checks for bad memory blocks. To use it, the device should be unmounted. And I personally don't recommend using this tool because interrupting it may cause the USB-Stick to be corrupt and reformatting is required. But here's how to use it:

badblocks -w -s -o error.log /dev/sda1

With this command, any errors of the device will be logged to the error.log file.
