Hello,

Currently I have a Siemens LOGO PLC for learning but I realized I need a PLC with 40 analog input and about 10 digital inputs and 10 outputs.

I also want to extract the sensor data from the PLC via MODBUS.

What would be the best suited and cost friendly PLC for me?

I'd like to recommend building free programmable controller  PXC36.1-E.D + 2stk TXM1.8U + TXI2.Open-S modul or TXI2.Open modul depending on number of DP from ModBus.

S7-300 and S7-400 Controller are an older genereation of Siemens Controller, which are still on the market.

The S7-1500 and S7-1200 controller are the new generation controller.

You can find an overview for the new controller in the S7-1500 system manual, chapter 3.

As you can see in the oveview and the performance of the different controller it is not only depending on the amount of Input which controller should be used.(have a look on the complete chapter 3).

Can I write logic like a standard PLC in it?

As far as i know from my experience. S7-300 is an older type of PLC and S7 1500 is a newer one. 

Both are modular PLC, but S7 1500 include IO and Power Supply in a CPU Module while S7 300 is exclude, where you need Power Supply, CPU and IO in different module. 

Both also can add expansion module like IO module when you need more IO.

 Yes, Desigo PLC's are free-programmable controllers. Environment is tool with the name XWP (Xworks Plus) and  programming tool is CFC, which we have licensed separately from original. It is same tool as for S7, but under different license.

Desigo products are developed for building control, so if you need PLC for an industrial case/project, then S7-1500 will be the right product.

For XWP you have to buy 1-years license and be a solution partner for Siemens SI BP. Contact you local Siemens office for more detailed info about how to be Solution Partner. Or let me know via personal message from where you are, and I can try to find an office.
