Quick ways to troubleshoot PLC-HMI connection issue?

I am specifically referring to situations where the HMI suddenly stops communicating with the PLC, requiring prompt troubleshooting to keep the production running. The possible causes in this scenario would typically include: A faulty Profibus connector. A faulty Profibus cable. Malfunctioning HMI itself. PLC malfunction (unlikely). I have encountered this situation multiple times, and it is usually the Profibus connector that causes the problem. However, on some occasions, it could be any of the four mentioned issues, necessitating the inspection and potential replacement of all of them, which can be time-consuming. Are there any quick methods to identify the problem quickly?

itafusna Silver Member Joined: 2/17/2020 Last visit: 11/19/2024 Posts: 1125 Rating: (207)	Hi, Below you will be able to find some points and FAQs that I consider are useful when you encounter a PLC-HMI connection problem: - Is it a direct connection or does it go through some intermediate element, such as a router? - Has it been tested with other PN/DP cables? - Do the date and time configured in the PLC and HMI match? - Within the PLC properties (only for S7-1500 and S7-1200 with FW V4.5 or higher), is there any protection against HMI access with a password configured? If so, has this password been set in the "HMI connection" for the panel to access? - In the PLC tag table, do the tags that are shared with the HMI have the "Accessible from HMI/OPC" and "Writable from HMI/OPC" checks marked? - Check the configuration of the HMI connection (S7ONLINE, IP/DP addresses) - If both PLC and HMI are simulated, does the communication between them work? This would indicate that the connection configuration and other parameters are OK. - Backup + reset to factory settings of both devices in case there is any “stuck” connection resource. A reboot could also help in this case. Useful FAQs: Why is it not possible to establish a connection to a CPU with firmware version 2.9/4.5 from an HMI panel (Basic, Comfort or Unified) or WinCC Runtime Advanced V17 or lower? In WinCC (TIA Portal), how do you configure a connection between WinCC Runtime Advanced or HMI Panel and an S7 controller over Industrial Ethernet (PROFINET)? No connection to PLC after WinCC Panel Images V17 Update 6 Why is the selected communication driver marked red in the "Connections" menu in the HMI configuration?

Murof Platinum Expert Joined: 8/3/2009 Last visit: 11/19/2024 Posts: 14215 Rating: (1775)	Hello aamirawan91 Also if you use a secure communication from HMI to a new PLC it could be that you do not have synchronized the date/time or do not even have set the PLC time. -> in the Secure communication a certificate is used with a defined time range. if the HMI or PLC is not inside this time range then it could also be that the communication is not working.
