I know this is an old post, but I have the same issue.

Sometime between 9/20/2018 and 10/12/2018, by profile started showing and recording as "AutoGen_2569852" rather than my long-time account name of "David_Wiens".

If I could go through the same corrective steps to merge back that OP did, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

I'm sorry that your nickname changed  

You can change your nickname by clicking on your name in the top right corner. I added an attachment for you, which shows the steps exactly.
