I am designing a F&G safety system and I was planning on using a 1200 CPU with an additional IO card, but I am not sure about the general requirements for such systems.

Are there any general requirements for the controllers on such systems? Europe in particular, but I am also interested in hearing requirements from other regions.

So, basically, this is a Safety system that is based on a F-CPU (Safety CPU aka Failsafe CPU)  a S7-1200FC CPU in your case  using Functional Safety program blocks for S7-1200:

The burner library pointed out by JacekD shows an example of how to use Safety blocks, you should study it carefully even ic uour project is slightly different.
