I've got a 810d siemens from early 2000, its a 3 axis VMC.

I'm having problems with the y axis. the machine will work fine most of the time but completely sporadically, I will have a 25050 error code show when the machine is first reset for use. sometimes this clears with another reset. However sometimes the codes 300608,25201,21612 show up. these then sometimes can be cleared with a reset, sometimes they wont clear at all.  A total power down and up gain rectifies this until the next time. this can occur twice or more a day, or not for a week. can happen in hot or cold weather, using coolant or not, or can sometimes happen during a program run.

our PLC guy is at a loss as he cant solve a problem that isn't showing all the time.

my only observation is that the encoder cable for the axis in question has oil inside the end on the back of the servo motor. even when this is cleaned the error can return soon after, and after that, oil will reappear, its only a drop or two but it finds its way on to the connectors. my boss seems to think this isn't an issue but I'm not sure, I cant seem to find where oil could be finding its way in past all the seals.

if anyone can shed some light on this issue, where too look, or what else I can try to locate the suspect parts. or if the oil in the encoder plug is pretty much a definite cause? where could it be coming from?
