The communication line is RS485, the speed rate is preset to 187.5kb/sec. The speed rate can be decreased to 19.2kb/sec and according to the device (CPU300, OP, CP6511) it can be even increased to 12Mb/sec. Regards Hristo Mihalev

I think this point will be clear from hardware specs of asic which supports MPI protocol. I will look for it. One more point. Is there any difference regarding token handling in MPI and PPI protocol? Balderdash Posts: 11 Rating: (0)	Siemens documentation is very thin on the ground in this respect, and it is a shame because networks do sometimes give strange problems and the standard support replies of check the cables and connectors is often not enogth, or irrelevant. What I do know is that both PPI and MPI use the same outer frame and token passing, as described in EN50170. This is also used in Profibus networks, and in fact the outer layer does not care wether the packet contains MPI, PPI, Profibus or whatever data. As far as I understand the situation, a PPI network master is not necessarily capable of handling the token passing. More specificly, it may not be able to repsect the strict timing requirements correctly. This was defitnitly the case of the passive PC/PPI cables that used to be used for S7-200 programming. If you used on of these on the same connection as an operator panel, essentially making the network multi master, then it generally worked, but often had problems as the PC was not capable of handling the timing correctly. In addition, PPI traditionaly supports only 9600 and 19600, whilst MPI is usually done at 187,5. Once again, there appears to be functional overlap.
