rs 232 communication with wincc flexible

I want to know that how we can cofigure communication between a RS-232 device and Wincc flexible 2008 without any s7 plc as an intermediate. Apart from this when i open the communications tab in wincc flexible, i can only see Simatic as the communication protocol. Other protocols like rs-232,rs-485 and TTY are shown but they are not operational. So do i need to install any driver for rs 232 communication? if yes then please name it Kindly help me in this issue as soon as possible. Regards

fbelic Posts: 327 Rating: (28)	Greetings If you are using PC and WinCC flex RT... We had several similar applications (there was even a bar-code scanner application). In such cases we would program an external application that was in charge of RS232 communication, lately in C#. Then we would exchange "messages" between WinCC flex and external application via files (one application create a file, the other one reads it and deletes it). This solution gives a great freedom regarding external application because you can program in "real" programming languages, but message-exchanging part can sometimes be a bottleneck... Best regards

Alis7freak Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	i am using flexible rt i have seen both the manuals an in manaul "part 2" on page 251 of the PDF, they have mentioned restrictions of using modbus. but after that they have mentioned about some setting of addresses of holding registers. i tried it but couldnt succeed. apart from this i also tried to communicate using difference combinations but ultmately i failed kindyl help me in this regard

Alis7freak Posts: 12 Rating: (0)	dear me fbelic, the solution you are suggesting requires knowledge of c#. situation is that i am not much familiar wit it and donot have so much time for developing that external app. if wincc flexible supports mudbus comm. then it should not restrict the users to use an intermediate plc to get data from an rs 232/485 device. if you get any other solution then do revert back to me. thanks and regards ali

You can't hook up anything as the wincc flex needs to know the protocol for communicating to the third party unit. But i would like to inform you that i am trying to connect flexible with our inhouse product that supports rs232/485 communication without any intermediate plc/controller. if u have any case study where you have directly communicated with a rs232/485 device then do revert back thanks alot for your reply regards ali

As you can see in the previous document, Flex can talk on DH+, DH485, Modicon Modbus RTU. These are the protocols that run on RS485. If your inhouse system can support any one these then you can make it happen. Unfortunately I don't know of any case that Flex has been talking directly to a third party system.
