Uploading software from PLC with downloaded software from TIA v16 to PG with TIA v18

karlo.kristo Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Hi, I am working at factory as an maintenance engineer and we want to add some modifications on one of our production lines. Program was done by an external company and it is made in TIA v16. We just got our new M6 PG from Siemens with TIA v18 on it. I connected to the PLC and went online to see if I have the newest version before editing the code. When i went online, I saw that all of my online and offline functions are different. I tried to compare it but the error message popped up saying that program was done in TIA v16 and that I have TIA v18. I honestly thought that I could enter any previous versions of TIA with TIA 18. At least from TIA v16 to TIA v18 (Image 2), but it looks like I can't for some reason. Also, when I try to upload the software to my PG, it gives me the same error. Do you maybe know what to do and is there any solution? Thank you in advance! Attachment Image 2.png (477 Downloads)

It is necessary to have the same version installed as the downloaded project on the CPU. You can use the TIA V16 Trial version to do the Upload and then update the project to your TIA V18: SIMATIC STEP 7 incl. Safety and WinCC V16 TRIAL Download

karlo.kristo Posts: 5 Rating: (0)	Thank you for the fast reply, I already have what should be the latest version of the software. I upgraded it to TIAv18 and the next step should be to download it. But, since I work at a factory which has non-stop production, this part of the production line is very important because a lot of further lines depend on its proper functioning. My concern is what if something goes wrong and the production stops. I understand that I could download the trial version of TIAv16 but it does not work in the long run. What if I just download the upgraded version to the PLC? Is there anything I should check and be more careful with before doing it?

This will have to be scheduled in the off time of the factory process. Unfortunately there is no way around it. The best option is what @itafusna suggests. With a Step7 V18 license you can authorize Step7 V16 installation. It is then possible to handle a download to the system when you use Step7 V16 -- if we assume that the hardware configuration stays as it is. You do need to watch out for what changes you make that the changes does not cause sequencing problems for the factory process. This part is normal for any change made to live system.

So no it is not about the upload (from the CPU) anymore, but about the download to the CPU, did i get this correctly? If its an S7-1500, you can use another SIMATIC Memory Card. You can download the project to the new SMC and use the current one as a backup. If something goes wrong, you can plug in the "old" SMC with the V16 project into the cpu again. So you have kind of an fall back strategy if there is an issue with the V18 project without having access to TIA V16. But there will never be a 100 percent security. Somethin to take into consideration is, that the cpu will startup with the defindes start values from the data blocks. regards sancruz

So if you buy STEP 7 V18, you can use all older STEP 7 TIA versions with this license. If its a STEP 7 V18 (combo) license, you can use STEP 7 classic, too. regards sancruz

I want to download software to the PLC, but before I did that, I wanted to check if online and offline versions were the same, but when it showed that there was a difference between functions, that is when I decided I wanted to upload it and my insecurities started to rise. This idea of using another SMC was very helpful. I will definitely take that into consideration. Thank you for that!
