545-1103 RS-232 Communications Question

nighthawkjw Posts: 2 Rating: (0)	I have a 545-1103 that was purchased from ebay. I am able to connect to it via 505-Workshop on my laptop to RS-232 #2 port, but not able to connect to the #1 port. I have read all info I can find on it (a lot!), and am aware of the dip-swich configuration for port 1 and have it selected for RS-232 (not printer). Also searched past posts with no luck. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. 1) Is there something wrong with my #1 port? 2) The cable works on #2 port, but not the other - do I need a different cable? 3) This seems like an issue I have encountered on other 545 series processors - does #1 port communicate for programming, or is it a terminal only type communication port? billwest Posts: 510 Rating: (117)	I have attached the pages from the 505 System Manual that deal with the port. The cable that works on port 2 should work on port 1 if the port is set up for programming.The dipswitch has to be in the correct position for port 1 to be a programming port. I don't have a Workshop manual but I have the Softshop manual. TheSoftshop manual has a cable pinout diagram for the RS232 cables. It shouldn't make any difference as compared to the 505 manuals. You should be able to use the same cable for port1 & Port2 as well as for Tisoft or 505 Workshop. As my post said, I had looked in a great deal of sources, including the PLC Workshop manual and the SIMATIC 545/555/575 System Manual, so was familiar with the information you both sent. I confirmed the DIP switch settings (SW 2 to the left) as well as the validity of my serial cable wiring and condition. The cable diagram from PLC Workshop matches the diagram shown in my TI-Soft manual. Also, I set the baud rate on the 1103 down to 300 with same results - Port 2 good, Port 1 not good. This is very odd because it is the 2nd processor with exactly the same problem, in addition to a completely different rack running Profibus on a 545-1106 and Port 1 on that processor does not work, hence my questioning the use of Port 1. One thing that makes me continue to want more of a definite diagnosis is that on page 3-24 of the 545/555/575 System Manual, the pinout for the ports shows a difference in Port 1 from Port 2. While the TX, RX and Gnd are the same, I see tha note 3 (fig 3-13) designates grounding pin 6 to select RS-232 operation. Could this be a typo and it should be Port 1 that has the user select for RS-232? So, to qualify this as a definite diagnosis, I must ask if anyone has a series 545 processor that they can communicate with Port 1 and if so, what am I doing wrong?

billwest Posts: 510 Rating: (117)	I have a 545-1104 CPU. I have a TISOFT programming cable. I plug the cable into Port 2 and I can go on line. I plug the cable into Port 1 and I can go online. All of the switches for the ports on the dipswitch are to the left (Power Supply) side. The battery Switch #9 and switch #10 are to the right. The first time I tried Port 1, it timed out. I hit F4 again and it connected. I have no insight into the problem you are experiencing with Port 1. billwest
