I have attached the pages from the 505 System Manual that deal with the port. The cable that works on port 2 should work on port 1 if the port is set up for programming.The dipswitch has to be in the correct position for port 1 to be a programming port. I don't have a Workshop manual but I have the Softshop manual. TheSoftshop manual has a cable pinout diagram for the RS232 cables. Attached is the cable pinout fromthe 505 Workshop manual. It shouldn't make any difference as compared to the 505 manuals. You should be able to use the same cable for port1 & Port2 as well as for Tisoft or 505 Workshop. Did you try on another baudrate ? if non of this helps i assume your port1 is dead.
