Hi all, I'd like to make a remote connection with my Logo!'s through the internet. I do not need a web server running on my Logo!'s (although I would be very happy if that would be available), but will be satisfied with the 'basic' functionality as offered by Logo!Soft through the serial COM port. For this I was thinking of using e.g. Brainboxes (www.brainboxes.com), by which a transparent RS-232 connection can be made through an ethernetLAN. So the idea is to run Logo!Soft from a remote computer, which linksto a virtual COM port through an ethernet link to a real COM port on the Brainbox. This port is then conected as usual to the Logo! Note that this eliminates the use of the much-discussed modem solution, which (except for GSM links) seems a bit outdated when you have ethernet available. My questions are the following: 1. Has anyone tried a solution using ethernet-to-serial and if so, what are the experiences? 2. If I implement the above solution, which serial cable should I use? Imight use my Logo! -> USB cable with a USB-RS232 converter but this seems a bit complicated to me. A more direct approach is to use the olderLogo!-> RS232 (9-sub) connector cable. But there seem to be two cables, which differ in price significantly. One is the 0BA0-1AA00 cable, while the other is referred to as the 'modem cable' (0BA0-1CA00). What are the differences and which one should I use? I have searched the Siemens site, the forumand the internet but did not find a clear answer. I Hope that somebody can help me out. HI everyone following this thread! I am SOOOO happy that this sort of topic is being raised again! Try having a look on this forum and the German version for something called a 'COM Server'. See this link /tf/WW/en/Posts/37756 I will attach a picture of one that I found on the forum some time ago that seemed to be working in an actual application. Do not use the MODEM CABLE - this is just a pin converter used when you connect a LOGO! Serial cable to an industrial 11 bit telephone line modem (like one from INSYS) to do what is called 'Teleservice' - i.e. engineering the LOGO! program from a remote location but via conventional analog telephone lines. You MUST use the SERIAL LOGO! cable - the USB version requires somehting intelligent like a PC with an operating system, to create a virtual COM port number assignment. Also, as per the last entry on this thread above, the LOGO! Serial Cable gets POWER from the PC at 5V DC on what is normally the DTR line (I forget which pin it is, but it gets set continuously HIGH and this provides the power needed by the OPTO COUPLERS and MAX232 voltage level shifter in the LOGO! Cable plug (that strange shaped thing at the end of the cable) - so you might have to provide this evernally if your COM Server cannot be put into the DTR Hi mode. I myself have investigated doing the same thing with GSM cellular, but 3 issues come up 1) 11 bit communication (start bit, 8 data bits, 1 even parity bit and a stop bit = 11 bits or 8E1 2) trasmissions MUST be 'Transparent' and MOST cellular modems and cellular operators do not support this or only do non-transparent 3) data transfer MUST be SYNCHRONOUS and again, most modems and operators only give ASYNCHRONOUS - and this messes up the timing that the LOGO! is expecting of upload & download data. SO GSM Teleserve does not seem to be an option - for remote locations where there is not an ehternet port! But nowdays, one can use a GPRS router or EDGE router or HSDPA or 3G Router and although I have not investigated it, it should be possible to find a device that has a serial port and that an VPN can be created through in much the same way that you want to do for the COM port. Hope you can find this info helpful and that the picture inspires you to do the same - please let me know by reply on this thread or Private Message if you succeed or not - I just do not have the time to do this investigation for myself - you know how it is - those that can 'do', those that cannot, 'teach'!
