The reader can also be configured to use unidirectional communication mode. E.g. if you're only interested in the UID. Then your approach can be used, but then you can't send commands to the reader.

Can you expand on the second part of your answer? I'm interested in reading just UID. How would you go about configuring the reader? Using Config Editor software via USB? I've searched through the manual you linked but can't seem to find anything about serial communication and configuration commands.

Yes that needs to be configured via Config Editor and USB.

Thanks for the reply. With your help I've managed to get the Read block to work (yay!). Only issue I have now is that it what's being read doesn't really correspond to what my card's UID actually is (hex or dec). Reader is set to "Autoread MIFARE Classic UID" with "Encode Output Value in Decimal" option enabled.

Ok, I get it. This is decimal-coded ASCII of decimal coded UID. The reader spits it out in ASCII with these settings

You could change the format in the "Host Interface\RS-232\Unidirectional" component of your configuration. The reader then simply sends every UID without waiting for a command to do so.
