kamish Posts: 3 Rating: (0)	Hello to all I am doing my industrial project which concerns the automation of a waste water pumping station. I am using the S7-300 PLC to automate the pumping process. My project also involves the use of Radio telemetry to send data from the pumping station to a master control station (MCS) located 7km away (there is a line of sight) I am thinking to use the CP341 (which supports Modbus RTU) to connect to a radio modem (which also support Modbus RTU) using the RS-485 serial interface. The radio modem will then transmit the monitoring data from the pumping station to the MCS. At the MCS, a Master Terminal Unit (MTU - which also support Modbus RTU) connected to the receiving radio modem) will then transfer the data to my WinCC (SCADA terminal). The MTU will be a master device and the PLC at the pumping station as a slave ( MTU requests & send data from/to PLC via SCADA using the radio telemetry) Is the above possibilty a feasible one??

Hello kamish, Have you finalized on the communication medium as Radio telemetry? As there is a possibility for GPRS based telemetry also from Siemens.

Hello kamish, What exactly is the MTU mean? Is it a PLC or ?? WinCC cannot directly communicate via MODBUS RTU protocol that's why am interested to more on the MTU.

Hello kamish, I have done a project a little bit similar to yours radio communication but my the communication range is <1km. I have used VEGA's radio data transmission device with profibus interface to communicate between S7-200 and S7-300(master) PLC. Well as my understanding, your project is feasible, if your hardware's Modbus RTU speed meets your requirement. By the way can you tell me your device brand and model? Because I am impressed with it's long distance functionality. Regards,

kamish Posts: 3 Rating: (0)	Hello to all, here is a brief description of the MTU as taken from my reports: "The Master terminal Unit (MTU) is a device that issues the commands to the PLC which is located at the remote site (pumping station) from the master control station, gathers the required data, stores the information, process the information and display the information on the SCADA terminal through telemetry" The MTU which I am using is the Motorola ACE 3600. It is in fact an RTU but can be configured as a Modbus RTU master...I think so..from the datasheet indicates... In fact the MTU can communicate with the receiving radio modem using Modbus RTU. The afterwards communication between the MTU and WINCC will be Modbus only on RS485. (I remember reading from a Siemens manual that Modbus tags can be converted to winCC tags!!!)..please correct me if I am wrong..

The afterwards communication between the MTU and WINCC will be Modbus only on RS485. Hello kamish, In WinCC MODBUS TCP is supported by defualt not MODBUS RTU.
