How do I connect a serial badge reader to an 840D controller that has remote I/O and a PCU50? |

Hi, If it requires a communication protocol then I would think through the PCU50 serial port and a VB program. Depends what you want to do with the data. |

Hello, The device is normal crib stock in our facility. I use these badge readers in lieu of passwords. Every badge has a unique code to it thus identifying each person. As the machine is now when the keyswitch is turned to position 2 or 3 a password is not required. The system that we have on the machine is a stock cnc package (nothing custom not even the screens). Where in the PLC program would the switch position 3 be located? And where would the passwords be also? Would the adapter in section 6.2 of this manual http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/en/14053309 work for the serial device? Thanks Chuck |

The keyswitch comes in over a bus connection to the machine control panel but are seen as inputs in the plc. See ops panel link. The actual input byte is varaible but the area normaly starts at 0 or 64 making position 3 input I4.4 or I64.4. This can then be forced to zero in the plc program. https://www.automation.siemens.com/doconweb/pdf/SINUMERIK_SIMODRIVE_09_2009_E/LIS2.pdf?p=331#page=331&view=FitBH,0&pagemode=none Your adapter is designed around the plc programming package and so it will connect you electrically to the system but you will still need a program running to format the data suitable for the bus and interpret what comes back on the bus. You've gained nothing that the PCU50 can't do for you (i.e. has a serial port and is connected to the bus). The password system already exists on the HMI and is accessed via the startup area. See attachment. You will have to remember to delete the password when finished as the system retains it even through power down/up cycle. You can call a plc function to cancel it automatically though. Obviously don't lose any new password to access level one. Attachmentaccesscontrol.pdf (127 Downloads) |
