Step 5 v7.2 (latest version developped) has been in product phase-out since 2005:

Since then, other manufacturers have stepped in and offer alternatives to Step 5, working under various versions of Windows. Some offer programming cables with drivers adapted to newer versions of Windows, open their product offerings to locate them.

The only problem with 3rd party software is that when the PLC is in stop mode, such software is unable to retrieve the diagnostics buffer. call the 1800-333-7421 siemens hot line and ask for the VM that contains the Step 5 and the USB-Serial solution.

There are no "official" VM suggestions from Siemens for their Field PGs.

Looking through various posts on the subject in the forum, recommendations from members for the Oracle VirtualBox come up a few times, but there seems to be no specific rejection of other VM vendors from Siemens programmers. See the posts from EHuggs and ChristophD in the following discussion:

Hello,

I have a VM with Windoes XP and a VM with Windows 2000 for Step5.The Laptop I use has a seriel port but the converter USB works as well.
