Hi KevinNfoDrives, From my knowledge, in profinet the devices are identified by their device name but in the end profinet is based on TCP/IP and that is why it is also necessary to have an associated IP address. As a support, I am going to share with you the following FAQ that might be useful: "Assigning names and addresses in PROFINET IO" I hope so, best regards! |

Hi KevinNfoDrives, PROFINET uses only layers 1, 2 and 7 of the OSI model for real-time communication. Therefore, no IP address is required and addressing is based on the MAC address only. Since the MAC address changes when devices are exchanged, the device name is defined during engineering. When the IO Controller starts up, it looks for devices with the known device name to know how to address them by their MAC address. Since configuration and diagnostic data does not need to be transferred in real time and will use larger data packets, this type of communication is IP based. This is why the IP address is needed. If you use a different IP address, the real-time communication will still work, but you will no longer be able to receive diagnostic data within your engineering tool, e.g. TIA Portal. Kind regards |
