Resolver or Encoder (comparison)

_oleksandr_ Bronze Member Joined: 4/2/2016 Last visit: 7/13/2022 Posts: 413 Rating: (6)	Hi, I thought that resolver this is an old technology and has been replaced by encoders, but even today, Siemens continues to produce servomotors with resolver, I would understand if it was for old drives, but also new motors with DRIVE-CLiQ have resolver, eg. SIMOTICS S-1FK7 can be ordered with without DRIVE-CLiQ interface: Multi-pole resolver or 2-pole resolver with DRIVE-CLiQ interface: R15DQ resolver or R14DQ resolver my question - what are the benefits of using resolver instead encoder (for new projects with new drives). Due to its construction based on inductive scanning (its a rotary transformer), it is more robust in areas with high vibrations or dust, compared to other encoder systems based on photoelectrical scanning, where a glass disc is inside. The disc can be easier damaged and is more sensitive for dust. But of course only very few application areas require such an additional robustness. Attached you find an extract from an old catalogue showing the construction principles. A disadvantage is the lower resolution compared to e.g. optical sin/cos encoders.
