How to collect data cheaply?

maxdamage Posts: 14 Rating: (0)	Hi, I have a simple program on 1212C (+AI4/AO2 module) that measures some analog values, performs some calculations and creates analog outputs. My question is: how to collect data from inputs, or PLC tags on PC (lets say 5 REAL values, every second); do I need to use WinCC/WinCC flexible? I look for a cheap way, since it is not for any industrial use, it is part of my thesis work at university and they have to buy everything that is necessary, but there are limited funds. Regards

Wild Bull Posts: 30 Rating: (1)	I feel your pain. I am using Indusoft. Their Siemens Ethernet drivers work with the S7-1200. The cheapest runtime key is about $150 US. The demo program gives you 40 hours to develop the your program, which is more than enough. A development/runtime key is $1200 US. There some programs on freshmeat but I have never tried them. My experience is, if a driver works on a 300 it should work on a 1200.

maxdamage Posts: 14 Rating: (0)	Thanks very much for your advice, I will surely try it when it becomes necessary. It's a pity that this kind of small things must cost so much, however I was told that I can use some Keithley laboratory equipment that could be just enough to do the job.

Aristotelis Posts: 147 Rating: (34)	Tomy Master Try PC Access In general, OPC is the "best" (= most convenient way) to do such communication. Also, you can program an OPC client fairly easy (C, C++, C#, Java, whatever you like...) as well as throw in a SQL DB (My / Postgre). This will help a lot: How can you access an S7-1200 PLC by PC Access and what is to be considered? There is another FAQ here: Flexible Decoding and Processing of Data Matrix Codes with S7-1200 (CE-X27) that is doing something simple, but using MS Access. Although I'm not a big fan of Access, you can definitely get a rough idea, but if you've got some basic programming skills, I would recommend to go to the SQL solution mentioned. There are virtually no limits in what you can achieve... Hope this helps.
