S7-1200 Mindsphere Connection with SIMATIC IOT2000 (IOT2040)

NISARG Posts: 22 Rating: (0)	Hello all, I am trying to connect the Siemens S7-1200 PLC to the MindSphere Platform and I was wondering on what are some of the possible ways to connect S7-1200 to the Siemens Mindsphere Platform? I already have a working mindsphere account. Is there any possiblity of transforming the SIMATIC IOT2000 (IOT2040) into a MindConnect IOT2000 (IOT2040) by loading an appropriate MindConnect image and updating the firmware? Such that the IOT device becomes a connection gateway to the Mindsphere. If not, where could be a good starting point to make the MindSphere connection?

To connect a SIMATIC IOT2040 to Mindsphere you would have to use the MindConnect Lib. An application example for the usage of this library on the IOT is coming out soon! Another thing that comes to my mind is using the MQTT Publisher on the S7-1200 in combination with the IoT Extension Upgrade for Mindsphere. Kind regards!

So that I would need to somehow get data from the S7-1200 through OPC UA or Node Red and save it to a temp file and then later upload it to Mindsphere using MindConnect Library. For the connection, I assume I would need to write a small unix script or something with the MindConnect Lib that runs forever and keeps the data uploading from the SIMATIC IOT2040 to Mindsphere. Is my understanding/approach correct? How can I setup the S7-1200 data transfer from the PLC into the SIMATIC IOT2040? With the MQTT Publisher in conjunction with the IoT Extension Upgrade, would I still need to use the SIMATIC IOT2040 to make the MindSphere connection or I can go directly from the S7-1200 to the cloud? Thanks!

So the best way would be to establish an S7 connection. Since the MindConnect Lib is C/C++ based, it makes more sense to stick to C++ and use the snap7 library. You could implement an application that runs continuously, collects data from an S7-1200 and sends it directly to MindSphere. So no temp file needed... The use case with MQTT Publisher and IoT Extension Upgrade would be a different approach without the IOT2040. But it's just an idea. Maybe the MindSphere technical support can confirm the feasibility of this concept. Kind regards!
