"Error during migration" when migrating using XP virtual machine

jasonr Posts: 108 Rating: (2)	When attempting to migrate an intermediate .am11 file into TIA Portal, the following error was received after the migration was about 30% of the way through: "Error during migration". There was no other information supplied with the error. It was found that this happened when the .am11 file had been created in the C:\ directory of a windows 7 operating system using the migration tool installed on an XP mode virtual machine, which is where the Step7 and WinCC classic software was located. When the .am11 file was created in another location, there were no problems migrating the project into TIA Portal V11. When the .am11 file was created on the C:\ directory of the local machine, it was visible in windows explorer on the XP mode virtual machine, but not in windows explorer on the local perating system, windows 7. Also, when the .am11 file was browsed to from TIA Portal V11 in order to migrate, the file icon was displayed with a padlock symbol on it. This was not the case when the .am11 file was created in a directory other than C:\. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the .am11 file created in the C:\ directory of the windows 7 OS had the attributes "AI", whereas the one created in another location had only the attribute "A". In addition to this, it appeared that the owner of the .am11 file created in the C:\ directory of the windows 7 OS was a user other than one of the expected users of that operating system. The .am11 file created in another directory, on the other hand, was owned by one of the local users of the windows 7 OS. It seems that there are special settings applied to certain directories in Windows 7, such as C:\, which are intended to prevent unauthorised access to these areas. This must be taken into account when attempting to migrate a project from Step7 classic to TIA Portal V11 if an XP mode virtual machine is involved in the manner described above.

0_Einstein Diamond Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 11/12/2024 Posts: 15392 Rating: (2443)	TIA Portal installation and many other tasks like migration do not allow \\tsclient\c or UNC paths for file locations. Map a drive in XP Mode to \\tsclient\c and it should work as expected. If you create a persistent mapping to that drive, it should always appear (after a brief pause after vm startup) and be available. Starter is the same way, so the presumption on my part is the same installation restrictions apply throughout much of the automation product line, and should be no surprise for 'in-application' file i/o either. Yes, it would be nice if it allowed UNC paths!

However, creating the .am11 file from the migration tool in a directory called \\tsclient\c\testworked fine, as it did with any directory other than \\tsclient\c. This seems to indicate that the problem is to do with the security settings of the C:\ directory in windows 7.

0_Einstein Diamond Expert Joined: 7/7/2010 Last visit: 11/12/2024 Posts: 15392 Rating: (2443)	Ohhhh, you mean you created a file in c:\ something like this: c:\my_migrated_project.am11 within the XP Virtual Machine rather than the main computer c:\ I use c:\temp in the main computer and move files to/from the Virtual XP machine and act on all files within the VM locally as if the main computer did not exist. Perhaps that is useful?

jasonr Posts: 108 Rating: (2)	Yes, the problems were encountered when I created a file such as intermediate.am11in C:\ of the windows 7 OS from within the XP virtual machine. And yes, creating the intermediate .am11 file in a directory local to the virtual XP OS and then shifting it to the windows 7 OS was the precursor to a successful migration using TIA portal in windows 7. Also, creating the intermediate .am11 file in any directory of the windows 7 OS other than the C:\ directory led to a successful migration. It is only when the .am11 file was created directly in the C:\ directory of the windows 7 OS from the windows XP virtual OS that any problems were encountered.
