the Diagnostic address has a number of purposes which- as the name suggests - relate all to the exchange of diagnostic information.
Think of this address as an I/O address for a "virtual" Slot, instead of theI/O addresses for the physically plugged I/O modules.

You'll need to use the Diagnostic address for example when you use SFC 13DPNRM_DG (i.e. to read out thethediagnostic information from the DP slave).
Afailure (or return) of a DP slave is also reported to the master via this diagnostic address(you'll then see the ET200M's Diagnostic address in the OB86 related entry of CPU's diagnostic buffer).
