Connecting I/o cards from a separate rack to s& 300 plc

freeze12 Posts: 36 Rating: (0)	Dear all I am using S7300 cpu 314c2dp plc. I have done its basic programming and addressing of its integrated cards. Now i want to connect some other input and output cards to it. Those cards are on a seperate rack. How do i connect them with plc? I need both hardware and software configuration instructions. Your choice will depend on how many racks you need to connect, how far they are located from the CPU, and what else you want to connect on the remote "racks". The basic premise is that you will need an interface module (IM xxx) to connect any remote rack. 1) If the distance between the CPU on the central rack is very short (inside the main cabinet for example) then you would select either an IM 365 or an IM 360/IM 361 pair. - the IM 365 is a unit consisting of 2 modules (one Send, one Recieve) attached by a one meter cable; you place the Send moduleto the right of the CPU in the main rack, the Recieve module at the head of the remote rack (if you have only IO modules you do not need a power supply, power will be supplied by the central rack CPU) and you setup the remote rqack to a maximum distance of one meter. You can have a single remote rack (8 more modules)attached to the IM 365. - the IM 360, setup also to the immediate right of the CPU in the cetral rack, can connect to an IM 361 in a remote rack at a maximum distance of 10 meters (cable to be purchased seperately); also the IM 361 can connect to another one in another remote rack, altogeteher one IM 360 can connect to 3 IM 361s, so you can connect to (4 x 8 modules/rack) 32 S&-300 IO modules in all. You will find a complete description on these IMs in the following manual for the S7-300 modules, in chapter 8, Interface modules. SIMATIC S7-300 S7-300 Module data I suggest you practce the setup of these modules by creating a dummy project in Step 7, opening the HWConfig editor,creating 2 (or more) racks and connecting them with IM 365 or IM 360/361 modules, and adding IO modules, CPs or FMs as part of the racks. The HWConfig editor will advise you whe you commit a mistake. 2) Since you have a CPU with an integrated Profius-DP master, you could also create a Profibus network with remote racks of S7-300 modules, connected by an IM 153-2 module. This is known as an ET 200M station, and you can have up to 125 of them on the network,with up to 12 modules per rack. Distances can go up to 1 km without repeaters. You could also add drives, motor controllers, valve ontrollers,other types of remote racks (from Siemens or other manufacturers), as long as they respect Profibus standards. Setting up such a network is also done through the HWConfig editor, dragging slave units from the Profibus catalog to the Profibus netwoprk available on the CPU's integrated Profibus port (shown as a line in the hardware configuration) You will find a description of the ET 200M remote racks in the following manual: SIMATIC Distributed I/O device ET 200M Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier

Is it necessary to use three core shielded cable or some other special cable to connect the connectors between plc and second rack for this second method? Regards Freeze

You will find a lot of information on Siemens Profibus equipment here: SIMATIC NET PROFIBUS Networks Profibus connectors (with integrated termination circuits) are always recommended. You can get them from Siemens (see the following link), Phoenix Contact, Procentec, Helmholz. Typical Profibus connectors Class A Profibus cable can be purchased from Siemens or Belden, or ABB, and others: http://www.belden.com/pdfs/prodbull/np242.pdf PROFIBUS – Cable - ABB For very short runs or for a temporary test (and at low bus speeds, 1,5MB or less)you can get away with non-standard cable, as long as it is shielded twisted-pair of the right impedance and capacitance. Make sure also that the outside diameter allows the Profibus connector to clamp the shioeld to the body of the connector forproper grounding connection. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier
