Hello To add to Jeff's post ... SIMOTION Applications can actually sometime be more complex than SINUMERIK and to say that SIMOTION is used for simple applications is an understatement. Like Jeff has observed, there are areas of overlap between PLCs, Motion controllers and CNCs. Motion controllers is a newer concept as compared to other two. Earlier Motion control was usually done by inserting a specialised Positioning Control module in a PLC Rack. SIMOTION is basically a combination of a PLC Controller + Motion Controller. It can execute the basic logic of PLC besides being a Specialised Motion Controller. It can be configured using standard Drives , HMIs and I/Os. Can start with just 1 Axis and go on to multiple axes. SIMOTION is used more where ( Sometimes Complex ) but repetitive controls are desires. Examples are : Printing Machines , Packaging Machines, Rotary Cutters , Flying saw etc. Normally only parameters like length , speed etc are adjustable. SIMUMERIK is used in typical CNC machines. It comes with its own Display with motion controller. Usually there machines are used for making variety of products by changing the Machining programs. Generally will have Minimum 2 Axes or 3-Axes. Here is an interesting Presentation of comparison between SIMOTION and SINUMERIK . SIMOTION Vs SIMUMERIK Hope this helps Cheers Navnag |
