Difference between TCP/IP and TCP/IP Native and ISO on TCP/IP

J_Bell Posts: 5822 Rating: (412)	Dear Anguraj, well, let me try. First of all TCP/IP == native TCP/IP. Some people call it this way or the other but it is both the same. You may also look for RFC 793 Transmission Control Protocol. ISO on TCP is a Protocol add-on to the RFC 793, this is the RFC 1006. You have still TCP on the bottom and RFC 1006 on top of it. The advantage of this RFC is that you have a clear data end sign in the data and you have a more block orientated communication than the stream orientated one of TCP. PROFINET is a collection of Protocols which use IP Addresses but use, in case of PROFINET IO,a rather thin out protocol stack of TCP.PROFINET uses also some other features of IP like ARP, SNMP or DCP. PROFINET IO is not routable. I hope this fills your needs. Best regards J_Bell

For routing you need the IP-based Layer 4 communication. Only parametrizing the devices is on Layer 4. hope this helps, regards,

If you add a route to your PC, router or firewall, it is routable. If it wasn't routable, how can you acces your PLC by ethernet, or via ethernet switch? I'm even able to use different PC's with VPN-link from site to site to get acces to my PLC. Siemens also have documentation for routing PLC data over VPN (like Teamviewer acces etc.). Yes it uses layer 2, but also layer 4 to be compatible with TCP transmission. However routing is more layer 3. Profinet is just TCP/IP, but without medialayers, so just basic sync&framing. When you want to acces it's webserver, you need layer 7.. with other words: the whole OSI layer is implemented.. at least in the way Siemens handles it. Edit: PLC --- route --- WinCC application.. which uses Profinet isn't it? Also PLC-> Remote IO over different routers is possible. But how stable it would be, is related to the application.

Cross-subnet communication via router has the following restrictions: You need special hardware (router). PROFINET communication via router is not possible; this means that real-time communication between both IP subnets is not possible. A central PG cannot assign IO devices names across subnets." Is cross-subnet PROFINET IO communication possible?
