Hello, TPN mean Triple Pole(TP)+ Neutral(N)which is 3 phases and neutral ,but the protection is given for three phases only and in 4 pole MCB protection is given to all 3 phases as well as neutral..

Hello, In case of 4 pole MCB the purpose is not to protect the neutral but it is rather to isolate the neutral.

Valli Posts: 262 Rating: (45)	HI, Just like to add a few things to the answers given above:- The using of" 3 Poles"or" 4 Poles " MCCB either for transformers or generators, that means if the " Neutral " should be directly connected " 3 poles " or switched on & off with phases " 4 Poles " will be decided after knowing the " Earthing System " used in the project. So, if you know the Earthing System you can decide which MCCB should be used for your application. Regarding the "Earthing Systems", we use as follow : – TT, TN-S, IT (with distributed neutral) : the " Neutral " should be switched on & off with phases. – IT (without distributed neutral ) : we don't need it as we haven'ta neutral – TN-C : asthe Protection line & the Neutral are combined " PEN", this line should be directly and all ways connected.

Because even when netral is cut off system remains connected with Ground. In TN-C we can use TPN only, because we cannont affor to cut neutral, doing so will result in system loosing contact with Ground ! In TN-C-S Again we can use MCB. Because Netral and Ground cable are separate. In TT we can use MCB. Because ground is provided locally. Conclusion: Its compulsory to use TPN in TN-C system rest everywhere you can use MCB.
