[snip] ... By the way, does anyone know the difference between MPI, DP, and Profibus. I am seeing these things interchanged and clumped together but I would like to know what they are/mean. I want to distinguish between siemens plc comms protocols vs comms interfaces because a project I am working on heavily depends on this stuff working right. Thanks! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Hello cq; Profibus-DP (ioften shortened to DP) is a fieldbus used in industrial communications. It is part of the Profbus line, which still carries Profibus-PA (for instrumentation), and used to include Profibus-FMS and profibus FDL, seldom used now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Profibus. DP stands for Decentral Perifery, or remote-IO, and is designed as a high-speed (upto 12 MBaud) maser-slave network. It is used to connect one (or more) masters to remote IO stations, drives, valve controllers,.. Masters can be CPUs, HMI panels and SCADA systems. Siemens is not the only company that develop interfaces for Profibus-DP, ABB, Yaskawa, Eaton among ohers offer Proibus-DP interfaces for their drives and CPUs, for example MPI is a subset of Profibus-DP used by Siemens to connect to and program the S7-300 and S7-400 CPUs. It can also be used for data exchange between CPUs that have a MPI interface. Compared to Profibus-DP, the network speed is slower (up to 187,5 kBaud) and the amoint of data rxchamged is smaller. If you really want to research MPI and Profibus-DP and how they are used with S7 CPUs, open the following Comdendium of CPU-CPU communications, you will find most of what yu are looking for. https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/view/20982954 Hope this helps, |
