Hi, Is it mandatory to use Grounding rings with MAG3100 or MAG5100W (EPDM/Hard Rubber Liner) for GRP Pipe? Awaiting your feedback. Regards, Davinder Singh |

Hello Davinder; Mandatory, no, based on the Siemens claims that the grounding el;ectrodes they provide with their Magflos are sufficient. But their installation manuals say different (see the attached document). Inmy experience when using fiber-glass pipinggrounding rings arean inexpensive (when planned for)and secure way to ensure the elimination of problems in the operation of the magnetic flowmeters. See the following links to different magnetic flowmeters manufacturers and their discussions on grounding requirements. The attached illustration is from a the first link (Emerson) and from a Siemens Magflo installation manual: Emerson process controls:Installation and Grounding of Magmeters in Typical…ground rings or ground electrodes are required when the piping adjacent to the magmeter does not provide a good electrical connection to the fluid; i.e., the pipe is lined or made of non-conductive material. Ground rings or ground electrodes provide this electrical connection.MAG flow meter Installation Manual - B MetersOn plastic pipelines and lined metal pipes, OPTIONAL grounding rings can be used at both ends to ensure a good potential equalization. Grounding rings are not included in the delivery.Flow Measurement 4 - SiemensFor DN 2…10 (1/12”…3/8”) sensor 2 PVDF pipe connections (Max. 70 ºC, PN 8 bar/max 158 ºF, 116 PSI), 1 grounding ring, 1 earthing wire, 3 PTFE gaskets, 6 pcs.Note: Even if Siemens provides grounding electrodes for its magnetic flowmeters and claims that grounding rings are not necessary for its applications it still provides installation for grounding rings as an option (just in case the surrounding piping provides no easy path to earth for the instrument.Hope this helps,Daniel Chartier |

Hi , EARTHING/Grounding RINGS: Necessary if material is not conductive as plastic tubes, concrete tubes...etc. All earthing rings must be connected to the earthing screw of the sensor. The document attached is old but at leat you can see the right information for MAGFLO meters. Regards, chook Attachment911E Protection & Earthing Rings.pdf (549 Downloads) |

Hi, Just to add what was said by dchartier, I send you a part of the new catalog of instrumentation which indicates which models include grounding electrodes. Regards Jean. AttachmentGrounding.pdf (468 Downloads) |
