Hello; Technically, all that is required for an ESD/SIS system is safety controllers and instrumentation, with adequate programming that follow the guidelines of the different international standards that govern Safety systems. So with the right hardware and software (S7-400FH CPUs and I/Os, Step 7 with F-Systems option) you could develop your own algorithms and safety matrixes for your ESD system. However, Siemens has developed over the years tools and functions for SIS and ESD systems in PCS 7, since they view PCS 7 as a plant-wide control system that is better suited for such safety applications. You could have a look at the following documentation for more detailed ressources: Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) (please open the links at the right for more documents) http://w3.siemens.com/topics/mea/en/safety-integrated/process-safety/sis/sis/pages/default.aspx Process Optimization and Energy Management with SIMATIC PCS 7 in the Fertilizer Industry (Video) https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/ww/en/view/99521827 Using SIEMENS F-PLC in ESD and F&G Systems (Safety Critical Applications) https://support.industry.siemens.com/tf/ww/en/posts/47342/ Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier |
