Profinet & Ethernet

Ammy Platinum Member Joined: 4/19/2008 Last visit: 11/21/2024 Posts: 1525 Rating: (159)	Hi, I Have one configuration having 4 PLC (315 PN/DP) communicating with each other on single network on Profinet. Now I want to add one other third party PLC on this Network with gateway which converts to Ethernet. Now my query is can, I connect the Gateway on the exiting Profinet PLC Network? If yes then which block I have to use for this. Or any one suggests me the gateway which convert ABB & AB PLC in to Profinet. Because I know the Converter with Profibus. But my client wants only on Profinet/Ethernet.

dchartier Grandmaster-Expert Joined: 9/27/2006 Last visit: 3/21/2025 Posts: 12344 Rating: (2707)	Hello Ammy; Just to make things clear at the start, Profinet is a protocol that uses Ethernet TCP/IP as a physical layer. So does Ethernet/IP, What you need is some form of protocol converter, in this case a Profinet I/O to Ethernet/IP gateway. Anybus offers one: http://www.hms.se/products/products.asp?PID=301&ProdType=Anybus%20X-gateway Others can be located on the Internet. Depending on the Ethernet protocol supported by your ABB PLC, you may have to search fora protocol converter that will translate between the 2 processors. Hope this helps, Daniel Chartier

Ammy Platinum Member Joined: 4/19/2008 Last visit: 11/21/2024 Posts: 1525 Rating: (159)	Hi Daniel Chartier, Thanks for answer, But can you tell me Can I do the communication Like, 4 PLC is alread yexchanging the data on Profinet port. & one of the third party is wanto communicate & he offering a Gateway(Redlion- www.redlion.net) which on ethernet. so Can we add this newethernet device& able to work on exiting network as ethernet device. & I got the Anybus information but my problem is they don't want to used anybus gateway because of the past project issue. can you please tell me it will work.

The helpdesk seems to be especially well organized and helpful, so any issue you have should be quickly resolved,with their experience. Now, the gateway should appear on the Profinet as a single additional node, so there is no intrinsic reason you should not be able to set this up. I would recommend you search on the gateway website for manuals and technical descriptions that could clear up specific issues you will face(such as the locaton of the gsdml file you will need to insert the gateway in the Profinet configurator, and the software you might need to configure theconversion ofdata in the gateway).
